Deputy who never entered school in US shooting resigns

"I'm Scot Peterson. I've been a police officer for 30 years, I've been a school resource officer for 25 years”

Video footage has surfaced of an armed officer being present at the deadly shooting in Florida but doing nothing to stop the shooter.

17 people were killed by a former student.

The shooting lasted about six minutes.

Sheriff Scott Israel, Broward County Sheriff's Office: “What I saw was, a deputy arrived at the west side of building 12, take up a position and he never went in."

The officer, Scot Peterson, was suspended without pay and placed under investigation. He then chose to resign.

The local community is grappling with word that Peterson did nothing to stop the shooter.

President Donald Trump also criticized Peterson’s inaction.

“He was there for five minutes, for five minutes. That was during the entire shooting, he heard it right at the beginning. So he certainly did a poor job. But that's a case where somebody was outside, they're trained, they're didn't react properly under pressure or they were cowards. It was a real shock to the police department."

The high school where the shooting occurred reopened on Feb. 23.

Dirtiest City in the Country

New York City has been ranked as the dirtiest city in the country.

A survey by cleaning service BusyBee ranked cities based on population density, litter, pests, and air pollution levels.

In recent years, NYC’s Department of Sanitation has added more trucks, street sweepers, and expanded its recycling program.

In the 2016 fiscal year, the Department of Sanitation found 95% of streets met or exceeded their standards of cleanliness.

With over 8.5 million people, the highest population of any US city, maybe it’s not surprising there’s a lot of trash.

But locals believe there is a difference between waste and filth.

U.S. President Donald Trump's daughter, Ivanka Trump, a senior White House adviser, arrived in South Korea on Friday (February 23) to attend the closing ceremony of the Winter Olympics.

Senior White House Adviser, Ivanka Trump :
"It is a great honour to be here in South Korea with the U.S. delegation. We are very very excited to attend the 2018 Winter Olympic Games, to cheer for team USA and to reaffirm our strong and enduring commitment with the people of the Republic of Korea. So thank you for the kind welcome, we are excited to be here and we are looking forward to several wonderful days. Thank you."

Speaking to the media as she landed at Incheon International Airport, Ivanka Trump said the U.S. delegation is looking to reaffirm their commitment with South Korea.

Later in the day, the team of officials will attend a banquet at South Korea's presidential Blue House hosted by South Korean President Moon Jae-in.

Her visit coincides with that of a sanctioned North Korean official, Kim Yong Chol, blamed for the deadly 2010 sinking of a South Korean navy ship that killed 46 sailors.

The United States is due to announce its largest package of sanctions yet against North Korea to further pressure Pyongyang over its nuclear and missile programme, as South Korea readies itself for more talks with the North's officials.

U.S. President Donald Trump's daughter and senior White House adviser, Ivanka Trump, met South Korean President Moon Jae-in on Friday (February 23) as part of a weekend trip to lead the U.S. delegation to the closing ceremony of the Winter Olympics.

Ivanka Trump attended a banquet hosted by Moon at South Korea's presidential Blue House in the capital, which featured a traditional Korean music performance for her delegation.

Ivanka Trump's visit coincides with that of a sanctioned North Korean official, Kim Yong Chol, blamed for the deadly 2010 sinking of a South Korean navy ship that killed 46 sailors, but a U.S. senior administration official said she had no plans to meet with the North Korean representative.

Since December, a team of archaeologists from the Museum of Copenhagen have secretly been excavating 20 skeletons discovered under City Hall Square.

The bones belong to men, women and children who are believed to have lived around one thousand years ago.

Archaeologists have dubbed them 'the first Copenhageners'.

The graves are lying just a metre under the asphalt on the busiest square in Denmark - and it's thought there are more skeletons below.

It's hoped further tests on the skeletons will reveal new information about the people who helped found the Danish capital.

Trump endorses raising minimum age to 21 for more weapons

President Donald Trump on Thursday endorsed a higher minimum age for buying certain rifles and tighter background checks for purchasers, saying "there's nothing more important than protecting our children," amid a public outcry for action after the Florida school shooting.

The president commented as he opened a school safety discussion at the White House with state and local officials from around the country.

The current federal minimum age for buying or possessing handguns is 21, but the limit is 18 for rifles including assault-type weapons such as the AR-15 used by a former student in last week's attack in Florida that killed 17 students and staff members.

"We're going to work on getting the age up to 21 instead of 18," Trump said at the White House, adding that he thinks the NRA will back it - despite the group's stated opposition.

Trump also reiterated his call for trained teachers or others in schools to carry guns as a deterrent to attacks.

And he said the nation needs to look at whether violent video games and movies are contributing to school shootings.

This ancient lion cub was frozen for tens of thousands of years until he was found in the permafrost in Russia's Yakutia. Scientists estimate that the animal reportedly died up to 50,000 years ago, well before the end of the last ice age, at just two or three months old. Now they have a unique opportunity to study the lion cub's intact DNA and organs to get insight into the lives of ancient cave lions and ice age mammals in general.

NRA leader-US must harden "wide open target" schools

The leader of the National Rifle Association says supporters of gun control are exploiting the school shooting in Florida to promote an anti-gun agenda.

NRA chief Wayne LaPierre says opponents of gun rights "hate individual freedoms" and want to eliminate the 2nd Amendment.

LaPierre spoke at the annual Conservative Political Action Conference in Maryland.

He says Democrats like House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi of California and Connecticut Sen. Chris Murphy are eager to blame the NRA and are calling "for even more government control."

LaPierre says the answer to increasing safety in schools is to heighten the security presence to the levels of federal buildings and sports games.

"To stop a bad guy with a gun, it takes a good guy with a gun," he says.

The U.S. women's hockey team ended a 20-year drought on Thursday by claiming gold at the Winter Olympics against Canada.

The game was a nail-biter, 20 mins of overtime didn't produce a winning goal.

Then, a penalty shootout ended in a tie, sending the two sides to a sudden death shootout to decide who would win.

That's when Jocelyne Lamoureux scored the deciding goal, followed by 20-year-old goalie Maddie Rooney's dramatic save against Canada's Meghan Agosta.

Team USA went on to beat its long time rival on ice.

The U.S. and Canada are the only two countries to have won gold in women's ice hockey since the sport made its Olympic debut in 1998 in Nagano, Japan.

Watch: Truck thief suspect leads police on dramatic chase

These are the dramatic moments real-life law enforcement looked more like a Hollywood film as police tracked a suspected truck thief in the US.

Aerial footage “from TV station KWTV showed a man remove a large item from a pick-up”:
http://www.news9.com/story/36814427/police-chase-vehicle-in-sw-okc before a motorist tries to stop him by shooting at the vehicle’s tyres.

The drama, which lasted nearly three hours, then saw the suspect evade police efforts to puncture the truck’s rubbers near Oklahoma City.

The vehicle then evades police efforts to corner him, leading officers on a chase across fields, eventually ending up near a pond.

Footage shows the pick-up reverse at speed into the water, before the suspect attempts to escape by wading away from police.

An officer then shoots the suspect with a stun gun, before he is handcuffed and taken away into custody.

Elephants tranquilised and 'relocated' after destroying crops

Who doesn't love elephants?

Well some farmers in Kenya aren't too fond of the giant creatures because they keep destroying their crops!

That is why wildlife officials there have begun a relocation operation for some 30 elephants, tranquilising them and transporting them to a National Park.

They fitted monitoring collars on the animals before using cranes to swing them, inverted with bound feet onto flatbed trucks.

Kenya has several thousand elephants, who face threats such as ivory poachers and habitat loss, but they often raid crops and farms as they migrate between parks, angering villagers who rely on the produce to feed their families.

The Kenya Wildlife Service, which moved the animals from Nyeri county, around 200 km north of Nairobi, to the Tsavo East National Park in a bid to avert such encounters, estimated the operation cost $6 million.

Three Egyptian police officers on routine duty saved a five-year-old from serious injury in an arresting catch as the boy fell from a third floor balcony.

The officers were guarding a bank in the southern Egyptian province of Assiut last Saturday (February 17) when a woman passer-by alerted them to the child's predicament as he hung off the balcony.

As the policemen tried to fashion a makeshift safety net out of a rolled-up carpet the boy tumbled, but one officer was quick enough to allow him to catch the boy in his arms.

The child was unharmed, Egypt's interior ministry, which published the video shot off a CCTV screen, said, adding that the policeman sustained minor bruises to his face.
